Five Star Rating

"Five Star rating for Julia Alexander and her company Dog Speak. After getting our Kodak (a yorkie mix) from the pound, we felt that being in our young 80's we should have some training for Kodak. Our next-door neighbor and Kodak's veterinarian recommended Julia. From the time she entered our house and explained how her method of training works we were more than happy to sign up. Our sessions were fun and our favorite part was to see how much Kodak enjoyed them. The outcome of the training far exceeded our expectations. Our sessions gave us a better understanding and connection with Kodak. If you are thinking about some training for you and your four-legged baby, you cannot go wrong using Julia and Dog Speak."

I'm Julia Alexander, KPA-CTP, dog trainer and behavior consultant. I help dogs build real-life skills and confidence, and help their families feel just as confident navigating the world together.

While I have extensive experience supporting nervous and reactive dogs, I work with families across the full spectrum of training — from foundational manners to complex behavior challenges.

With a background in music performance, clinical trial study design, and project management, I bring structure, clarity, and thoughtful experimentation to every session. I take a wealth of information and narrow it down into practical, manageable next steps you can actually use.

I'm known for clear communication, compassionate guidance, and flexible problem-solving. I meet you and your dog where you are — and we move forward from there, together.

Don't take my word for it... take theirs.

"Invaluable"

I’m so impressed with Tenby’s progress so far. I’ve enjoyed reading the notes and have tried watching the videos but internet is spotty on the river so that’s been challenging. Watching is definitely educational for me! Thank you for continuing to work with her and taking such thorough notes. Invaluable.

"Things always go better after your visits"

Just a quick note to say that although I always feel as if I don’t know what I’m doing, things always go better after your visits. Selene and I did so well on her backyard walk today. We had fun and she caught on quickly. She is also much more relaxed today. […] Thanks so much.

"It was a big help"

Thank you from my partner and I for your class. It was a big help getting back into training after she was diagnosed with anxiety. It was an eye opener on many things I need to do (and) the Google Classroom really helps. I appreciate all your help and individual attention. My partner really liked all the activities and you personally!

"Julia goes above and beyond"

Julia was amazing to work with! She makes sure to check in with everybody in the class and answers all questions. Julia also goes above and beyond by sending extra materials like videos and handouts to help out with more difficult concepts. I highly recommend taking her class, you won’t regret it!

"Julia sets up the space with warmth, personal reflection, and clear instruction"

Julia has a great sense of the needs of the dogs (and people!) in her class. She sets up the space with warmth, personal reflection, and clear instruction, followed by checking in where folks need her the most. And on a personal note, we saw a lot of growth from our dog! During the beginning classes, Dobby struggled to calm down and with impulse control. By the end of his classes, he was able to sit and wait patiently for a good chunk of time during the lesson. We also had a lot more strategies to help him grow and learn!

"Love the way you break down behaviors"

It has been great for Skipper and me. He’s doing better on all fronts and we are closer than ever. Love the way you break down behaviors. You are really good at this.
